Hillsborough Town Manager Eric Peterson announced last week that his office is completing an investigation into the backdating of the police department’s compliance records with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, a standards organization that certifies that law-enforcement agencies are keeping up with training, crime tracking, off-duty employment records and several other areas.
Hillsborough Mayor Tom Stevens said he and members of the town board have been briefed during the investigation.
“What we feel is enormously distressed,†Stevens said, “and we’re going to do what we need to do to get back on track.â€
The town’s former police chief, Clarence Birkhead, recently resigned, saying he wanted to concentrate on his effort to unseat Orange County Sherriff Lindy Pendergrass. Birkhead said last week that his stepping down had nothing to do with the compliance issue.
