Estes Hills Elementary School might be celebrating its 50-year anniversary this year – but even an old school can go fashionably “green†in celebrating Earth Day and reviving their Read-A-Thon program.
Approximately 500 Estes Hills students signed paper “leaf†pledges to do “Green Time NOT Screen Time†during the 2010 “Growing Readers†Read-A-Thon and school observation of Earth Day (April 22) and National TV Turnoff Week (April 19-23). Estes Hills students read a total of 150,370 minutes in their first Read-A-Thon in 10 years, far surpassing the school goal of 100,000 minutes. Ms. Ramadan’s fifth-grade students read a total of 17,481 minutes – more than any class in the school.
In celebration of exceeding the school reading goal, a tree will be planted on school grounds in a ceremony attended by the top reader from each of the 24 classrooms.
Students collected sponsorships toward their personal reading goals, and almost $4,500 has been contributed in support of school field trips, library and technology resources, enrichment programs and teacher supplies
