Carrboro resident Christopher Ray McBride was arrested last week on charges related to child abuse that resulted in the blinding of his 1-year-old daughter.
According to Carrboro police, McBride, 28, of 810 Old Fayetteville Road, was charged with felony child abuse and felony assault. The child’s mother, Darlene April Fernandez, 26, also of Old Fayetteville Road, was charged as an accessory after the fact, police said.
“It seems reasonable to believe that she knew what was happening and didn’t report it, as is required by the law,†Capt. J.G. Booker said.
According to Booker, the child was brought to the hospital with injuries that appeared to have happened over time, rather than as a single incident. Medical authorities contacted social services, who then got in touch with police.
As of Wednesday morning, McBride was being held in Orange County Jail on $500,000 secured bond, while Fernandez was being held on $75,000 secured bond.
