UNC student named Phillips Ambassador

Posted on May 13, 2010 by Staff

Tiffany Yonts, daughter of Kimberlee and Richard Yonts of Carrboro, has been awarded a Phillips Ambassadors scholarship for study in Asia.

Tiffany, a linguistics and Asian studies double major at UNC, will study in Japan during the 2010-11 school year. She will attend Kwansei Gakuin University in Nishinomiya, Japan.

The Phillips Ambassadors is a scholarship program for UNC undergraduates designed to broaden awareness of Asia on and off campus. The scholarship combines an award for study in Asia with an academic course that puts the experience in greater global context and challenges students to share their experiences of Asia upon their return.

In accepting the scholarship, students agree to submit an article about their studies in Asia for a campus or hometown publication. They also give an outreach presentation about their experiences in Asia to a school in their hometown and other local schools around North Carolina, introducing more young people to Asia.

Phillips Ambassadors are chosen twice a year and receive up to $7,500 each for a semester or year-long program and up to $5,000 each for a summer program. Scholarship recipients are selected based on their academic achievements and commitment to activities, service and leadership roles in the classroom and community.

Yonts was one of 22 undergraduates and one graduate student selected as Phillips Ambassadors for 2010 study-abroad programs in Asia.
