Trustees review Carolina North law school site

Posted on May 27, 2010May 27, 2010 by Staff

The UNC board of trustees are scheduled to review and possibly approve a site at Carolina North for construction of a new School of Law at a meeting today (Thursday) on campus.

The site for a proposed 287,000-square-foot facility is to the south and west of a site across from Piney Mountain Road for the university’s Innovation Center. The law school site would anchor the first section of the main road through Carolina North.

The project is estimated to cost $153 million and the university has requested advance-planning funds from the General Assembly in this year’s budget.

The trustees are also considering the next steps for a $37.5 million project at its Bingham Facility, an animal-testing center off N.C. 54 that has been a focus of concern for its neighbors and members of Preserve Rural Orange.

The facility has been repeatedly cited by the state over runoff and wastewater issues and last week the university was fined $15,000 in civil penalties and $1,612.48 for investigative costs over wastewater spills.

The university recently received a $14 million grant from American Reinvestment and Recovery Act funds to improve and expand the facility.

Other projects up for review by the trustees Thursday are a proposed $7.5 million renovation for the Frank Porter Graham Student Union and a $5 million upfit to Lenior Hall.
