Smith Middle School opens fitness center

Posted on June 3, 2010June 3, 2010 by Staff

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro school district was awarded a $821,662 Physical Education Program (PEP) grant in 2008 from the Department of Education to provide equipment and support for students to participate in physical education activities funding for teacher training and education. Smith Middle School is a beneficiary of PEP grant funds that furnished a fitness center featuring 17 pieces of equipment, including elliptical machines, stationary bikes, Airdyne bikes, rowing machines, treadmills and heart-rate monitors.

Every P.E. class visits the fitness center once a week for workouts designed to reach individual student’s target heart-rate zone using heart-rate monitors. Before heading into the fitness center, P.E. students warm up by running laps outside. Students are assessed on effort as measured by the heart rate monitors rather than skill.

“The Smith physical education department is dedicated to the promotion of lifelong fitness skills,” said Don Minnick, Smith health and P.E. teacher and athletic director. “The PEP grant has provided us the opportunity to use technology to develop our students as 21st century learners. Our challenge in the future will be to maintain these valuable resources.”
