Editor’s note: Monday night’s meeting of the Chapel Hill Town Council started with a ceremony honoring Joey and Freddie Shelton and Melissa Williams for their actions on May 12 of this year. The Shelton brothers accepted the presentation of Chapel Hill’s keys to the town with the grace and humility befitting true heroes.

A Resolution Honoring Joey and Freddie Shelton

WHEREAS, on May 12th, 2010, Joey Shelton and Freddie Shelton of Pittsboro, North Carolina, witnessing the violent assault of a UNC-Chapel Hill student, responded and successfully thwarted her attempted kidnapping, which occurred as she was out jogging near downtown Chapel Hill; and;

WHEREAS, this act of heroism was committed selflessly, resulted in injury and hospitalization, and exposed the Shelton brothers to great personal risk; and

WHEREAS, this act of heroism potentially saved a life and resulted in the successful capture and arrest of the suspect; and

WHEREAS, the heroism displayed by the Shelton brothers is reflective of the best qualities of humanity, and has made Chapel Hill and the University community a safer and more whole place; and

WHEREAS, while recognizing no accolade or award is sufficient for their courageous act, in effect selflessly ensuring the safety of their fellow humankind, the Mayor and Town Council of Chapel Hill, nonetheless, wish to bestow the highest honor on the Shelton brothers and award them keys to the Town of Chapel Hill, and commend them with a resolution honoring their bravery and thank them for their service as Good Samaritans.

NOW, THEREFORE, LET IT BE RESOLVED, by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council hereby honors and praises

For their heroic and outstanding service to the Town of Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina communities.
