FROM THE EDITOR: The 7,000 Club

Posted on July 9, 2010July 14, 2010 by Staff

We didn’t exactly get out the trumpets for the event, but you may have noticed a small article a couple of weeks ago in our business section about our circulation increase.

We’re now printing and distributing 7,000 copies of The Citizen, a fact that we state with some sense of pride because that means demand for the paper is on the rise. The Citizen is a free newspaper distributed in about 175 locations. Unlike other local free publications, we do not “broadly cast” our paper and then claim the number as our circulation. We may have to do that someday in the future in order to compete, but our reasoning since the beginning has been that this form of getting the paper out is a much more sustainable approach, absorbing fewer resources, such as trees and gasoline.

Regardless, we seem to be getting more popular, and as a result of demand we’ve bumped up production and added a dozen new distribution points, among them several spots around UNC Hospitals. As always, if you can think of a place where we ought to be distributed please let us know.

We’ve also seen another jump in circulation of the paper online. Since we quietly started offering pdf copies of the paper on our website, downloads have jumped. Now each week more than 1,000 people take advantage of the service. You can even go back and download past issues on our print archives page at carrborocitizen.com/main/printeditions
