Letter: The spirit of 116 Old Pittsboro Road

Posted on July 21, 2010July 21, 2010 by Staff

We were very pleased to read about plans for the property at 116 Old Pittsboro Road in last week’s Citizen. As members of the Carrboro Greenspace: Center for Community and Sustainability, we believe that the Carrboro community should feel very fortunate – especially with such tremendous pressures for growth and development for a truly unique environmental treasure – to have such a vital piece of land under the stewardship of the Kendalls. For the Carrboro Greenspace, it is also delightful to hear that our vision may still be alive. When we were on that land, in addition to hosting films and other events for hundreds of community members, we had also begun environmental education and awareness activities and were working to turn the space into a publicly accessible center, in which we further wanted to promote the arts and preservation of the land’s history (including issues surrounding race relations, something critical not to overlook.) We encourage the Kendalls to continue to explore options for both preserving the property through a conservation easement and sharing this inspirational space in downtown Carrboro to advance the environmental and social consciousness that Carrboro is known for, especially in these times when the survival of many life forms depends on our re-learning how to reconnect with nature and with one another.
