ART NOTES

Posted on July 29, 2010 by Staff

She didn’t just float away

The bright-orange sculpture of a floating girl by artist Cecilia Lueza titled “Landing” disappeared from its exhibit location in front of the Chapel Hill Museum last week and a $250 reward is offered by the Chapel Hill Public Arts Office for its safe return or information leading to its safe return, no questions asked. The missing sculpture is an orange-and-yellow urethane form mounted on a steel pole, 6 feet tall by 5 feet wide and 2 inches thick. It depicts a girl in a dress and striped stockings jumping or floating. “Landing” was reported missing July 21. The sculpture is temporarily on loan from the artist and is exhibited as part of the 2009-10 Sculpture Visions outdoor exhibit, which places art in public places around Chapel Hill. Please contact the Public Arts Office with any information regarding the piece at 968-2750 or info@chapelhillarts.org

Wells and Hahn open show in Hillsborough

Two artists from the rural regions of Orange County open a combined show this weekend at the Hillsborough Arts Council. Susan Wells is a sculptor from Cedar Grove who runs Maidenhair Studio. Painter Jennifer Hahn has produced a series of works focusing on the county’s endangered farmlands.

Their show runs through Aug. 20, with an opening reception July 30 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Locopops launches POP ART Contest

Locopops is holding a contest in August asking artists to create a “Locolebrity” pop art drawing.

To enter, download the entry sheet at ilovelocopops.com or pick one up at your local Locopops store. Submissions will be judged in three age-group categories: under 8 years, 8 to 14 and 15 and over. A panel of judges, led by local artist Galia Goodman, will select the finalists.

Winners for all store locations will be announced the week of Sept. 6.
Prizes include free pops and a “Think Global, Act Loco” T-shirt.

Triangle ArtWorks launched

A new organization aimed at connecting the Triangle’s creative community has announced its launch, with plans “to provide the services, support and resources necessary to cultivate and ensure a vibrant creative community in the Triangle region.” Triangle ArtWorks founder Beth Yerxa said last week that she hopes the group’s new website, triangleartworks.org, is the first of many efforts to help knit the community together across disciplines and county lines. Chapel Hill’s FRANK gallery will host a Triangle ArtWorks event in August, with the date soon to be announced.
