PITTSBORO – Hello from south of the border – south of Carrboro, that is.

I’ve been invited (I invited myself, actually) to join The Carrboro Citizen as your UNC sports columnist. I’m grateful and honored to be a part of this newspaper.

My credentials, for those who haven’t read me, are that I have covered college athletics since 1987. Long before then, I followed ACC sports with an emotion that can only be described as passion.

My first memories of Carolina and Duke basketball were games between Larry Miller, Bob Lewis and Duke’s Bob Verga and later Rusty Clark versus Randy Denton.

I saw David Thompson play for N.C. State, and he was the greatest player in ACC history. No doubt. Duke would never have gotten put on probation trying to recruit an ordinary player.

During my first tour as a Carolina student, I saw Lawrence Taylor tomahawk quarterbacks into the Bermuda grass at Kenan Stadium, well before the New York Giants and the rest of the National Football League got to see him.

On my second tour as a Carolina student, I actually went to class, became less of a fan and started my development as a professional journalist. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of covering some of the finest athletes to play college sports and some of the greatest moments created by those people.

In my position with The Carrboro Citizen, I will try to bring you unique views of UNC sports and the people who coach and play them. The ordinary story of who won and who lost doesn’t excite me as much these days. The personalities of the players and coaches and the heroics they manage to perform before full stadiums and arenas are far more fascinating, to me anyway.

So hello, and I look forward to my weekly encounters with you all.
