District raises academic standards for athletes

Posted on August 25, 2010 by Staff

A “C” average soon will be required for athletes to be academically eligible to play sports in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. The school board recently directed district PE and athletics coordinator Scarlett Steinert to explore eligibility standards that would be more in line with those used for admission to institutions of higher education.

Steinert and her committee learned that at least two North Carolina school districts – Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and Guilford County Schools – require their student-athletes to attain 2.0, or “C” averages, in order to play sports. The district’s four middle schools also require a “C” average for participation in sports. The board adopted the change, which takes effect next fall.
