Katrina anniversary

Posted on August 25, 2010August 25, 2010 by Staff

Five years ago, a storm named Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast, leaving thousands homeless and calling into question the future of an entire region.

A group of researchers, artists and community leaders will meet Sept. 8-10 to remember the victims of Katrina and discuss the human impact of the storm. The public is encouraged to attend any of the free discussion panels and events to be held on campus. Experts will discuss the socioeconomic ramifications of Katrina and the importance of art in conveying the nuances of such a disaster to the public. Donn Young’s photography exhibit, which captures the aftermath of Katrina, will have its opening reception in the Center for the Study of the American South on Sept. 9, and on Sept. 10 UNC’s School of Law will hold an RSVP-only roundtable conversation about the provisioning of pro-bono legal assistance to hurricane victims. More detailed information regarding locations and times can be found at the Center for the Study of the American South’s website (uncsouth.org) or by calling Lisa Beavers at 962-0503.
