It’s traditional when the fall semester rolls around for the university to send along a few statistics about the first-year students arriving in town.
Here’s a look at some of the facts and figures:
• Admitted first-year students hail from 98 N.C. counties, 42 states, the District of Columbia and 27 other countries
• 23,275 applied, 7,547 – 32 percent – were admitted and 3,990 are expected to enroll.
• 19 percent are first-generation college students.
• 41.9 percent ranked 10th or higher in their class.
• The average SAT score was a 1304 average combined score on reading and math, 644 in critical reading, 660 in math and 637 in writing.
• 94.3 percent of the students have volunteered in their communities.
• 54.5 percent have traveled outside the United States.
• 17 percent have achieved fluency in another language.
• 48.1 percent were presidents of classes or clubs.
• 27.2 percent conducted research outside the classroom.
The most popular majors of the enrolling class as indicated on their applications are biology, business administration, journalism, political science, chemistry, psychology and pharmacy.
Overall enrollment at the campus this year is 28,916 students. Of those, 17,981 are undergraduates, 8,386 are in graduate school and 2,549 are in professional programs.
Classes at the university began Tuesday.
