Scores & reports

Posted on August 26, 2010 by Staff

East Chapel Hill 20 – Pittsboro Northwood 18
In its first game under the leadership of head coach Brent Renner, the Wildcats, who coming into the night had won but a single game since 2007, made it clear early on that a new era had begun. Quarterback Drew Davis connected with Quadry Ridley in the right-hand corner of the end-zone for the initial touchdown. Northwood capitalized on a blocked punt with nine minutes left in the second quarter and downed the ball for a safety. Northwood followed with a short field goal and a touchdown with 23 seconds remaining in the quarter, and it appeared the Chargers would close out the half with the lead. Thirteen seconds later, the Wildcats were up, 14-11, due to a lengthy kick return and a beautiful pass by Davis to Alex Moore straight up the middle of the end zone.

Northwood pulled ahead again 90 seconds after breaking huddle for the second half, and the score remained 18-14 until Davis connected in the end-zone once again with seven minutes left in the final quarter. The Wildcats held off a persistent Charger attack in the final minutes to earn their first-ever winning record as a 4A school.

“With the score going back and forth like that, we needed to make plays, and we did,” said Coach Renner, who was hired to replace Darian Harris in June. “We killed the clock when we needed to, and really played some smart football.”

The Wildcats will be tested again as they face Cardinal Gibbons in a road matchup on Friday night.

Carrboro 32 – St. Pauls 14
Carrboro Quarterback Derek Bryant hit receiver Nassar Omar with a 60-yard touchdown pass on the second play of the season, and long-range pass plays hurt St. Pauls for the rest of the game, as Omar ended the night with three receptions for touchdowns and Carrboro moved the ball virtually at will. Although the yardage totals (349 for Carrboro, 310 for St. Pauls) were nearly equal, turnovers plagued the Bulldogs all game and eventually led to a Jaguar rushing TD in the second half.

Carrboro faces Orange High School on Friday.

Chapel Hill 20 – South Granville 24
Chapel Hill opened its season with a heartbreaking loss on Friday night, in no small part thanks to sophomore South Granville running back Josh Bailey, who carried his team to victory after a Tiger-dominated first half. The game itself was dominated by mistakes on either side – Chapel Hill gave away 109 penalty yards and South Granville ended up turning the ball over six times on the night. The Tigers eventually ground to a halt in the second half, as they gave up three rushing touchdowns and failed to capitalize on two turnovers inside Viking territory.

CHHS plays at Cedar Ridge this Friday.
