Student raises money for library in Peru

Posted on September 2, 2010 by Staff

Chapel Hill High School 2010 graduate Kyla McConnell will hold a silent auction on Sept. 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Fleet Street Gallery to raise money to build a library in a remote Peruvian village in the Andes Mountains.

This summer, McConnell gave up her senior trip to Paris to visit Huaripampa, Peru, where residents have donated land and pledged labor hours to build the library. To collect funds for the library, McConnell and her mother formed a nonprofit, The Peru Project, which will hold the silent art auction.

Local artists Peg Bachenheimer, Jude Lobe, Andria Linn and David Sovero are among the artists who have donated pieces for the auction. Isti Kaldor will paint to Andean music during the event.
Online bidding is underway at idonatetocharity.org/stor/theperuproject
