Summer’s end

Posted on September 2, 2010September 22, 2010 by Staff

Just like early spring, early fall is a busy time when we make up for the encumbrances of the previous season. Perhaps we’re still living on the agriculture-influenced clock, but this year it truly was too damn hot to do much.

On Sept. 21 of this month – a Tuesday – at 16 minutes before the stroke of noon, you can kiss this summer good-bye. Feel free to balance some eggs on end in celebration.
In case you forget, marking this event is the waxing harvest moon, which reaches fullness about two days later.

Not that we need much in the way of celestial events to let us know that recess is coming to an end. By the time we close the books on the season, the local youth will have spent nearly a month in the classroom. And, given the scorcher that this summer will be remembered for, I expect we’ll see sweaters in style a littler earlier than usual.

Earlier on this month, you may be among the many making one last dash to the shore over Labor Day – that is, provided one of those storm systems now departing the west coast of Africa and headed toward Cape Verdes doesn’t spoil the fun.

Amid all the change, keeping an eye on the Atlantic weather is a constant in September, which has a tendency to see more visits by cyclones than any other month.

(Please note that we’re collecting readers’ stories about experiences during various tropical storms. So feel free to drop me a line at editor@carrborocitizen.com)

Throughout this month, the calendar is typically full, with the Carrboro Music Festival on Sept. 26 one of the standouts of course. You may also wish to note that the first Carolina home game commences at noon on Saturday the 18th.

And for all of us who are planning to spend any time in front of a television watching playoffs, kick-offs or new-season spinoffs, please remember that this is an election year, and a right cranky one. Having recently returned from a nearby state that just endured a contentious and well-financed primary, I’ll share this simple advice from the dazed survivors: Prepare to mute.
