FOOTBALL

Chapel Hill 40 – East Chapel Hill 28

Thanks to an impressive passing attack and vast overall improvement, East Chapel Hill (1-4) rose to the occasion for this rivalry’s most even matchup in recent memory. Still, the Wildcats weren’t quite able to chalk up a sorely needed “W” against crosstown foe Chapel Hill (3-2).

East Side and West Side, as their fans call them, traded scores until early in the second quarter.
In fact, East led 14-13 at one point, thanks to a botched Chapel Hill PAT, but the Tigers eventually exploded for a 20-point second quarter, gaining ground that East was never able to recover, despite a respectable two-touchdown second half.

Chapel Hill quarterback T.J. Johnson, who completed four passes in the end zone, joined forces with running backs Daniel Watson and Kenyon Ross in a relentless chain-moving performance. Ross averaged over nine yards per carry for the game, rushing the ball 94 yards on only nine carries.

The other T.J., East’s running back T.J. Tate, put up 108 yards by himself, helping place the Wildcat offense squarely in position for their four touchdowns, all of which were either thrown or run in by quarterback Drew Davis. Alex Moore and Tyler Klimko each had end-zone grabs for the Wildcats.

East will take on conference rival Jordan on Friday, while Chapel Hill will match up against a well-rested and streaking Carrboro squad.
