FOOTBALL

Carrboro 28 – South Granville 7

Carrboro more than survived this season’s first foray into conference play last week, as it gave Carolina 9 rival South Granville (4-4) a sound thrashing, 28-7. The win kept the Jaguar squad’s record spotless. With seven wins and no losses on the season, this year’s Carrboro team has now won more games just this fall than it had in every previous year of the school’s existence – combined.

This particular victory was without standout wide receiver Nassar Omar, the responsible party for each of Carrboro’s four TDs last week against Pfafftown Reagan. Still, the Jaguars were more than capable of compensating for his absence. The running game returned, as Torrell Farrar once again topped the 100-yard mark in a superb two-touchdown performance; quarterback Derek Bryant’s arm was responsible for Carrboro’s other two trips to the end zone. Bryant finished the game with 203 yards on only 13 completions.

It was the Jaguars’ staunch defense, however, that spelled doom for a South Granville team that relied heavily on the running game. A missed field goal was as close as the Vikings would come to getting on the scoreboard for much of the game. When they finally scored in the fourth quarter, only three minutes remained, and Carrboro was up by 21.

Carrboro will go head to head with conference opponent Northwood of Pittsboro this Friday on the road.

Cardinal Gibbons 50 – Chapel Hill 30

The Tigers also opened conference play last week, albeit in a far less glamorous manner than Carrboro. Carolina 6 opponent Cardinal Gibbons (5-2) had its way with Chapel Hill (3-4) on Friday, 50-30, due in no small part to six interceptions thrown by Tiger quarterback T.J. Johnson.

Cardinal Gibbons opened the game with a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and Crusader running back Tim Buckley soon put his team up by another seven points with a 1-yard run into the end zone. Buckley finished out the night with 160 yards on the ground.

Chapel Hill scored in fits and starts. After falling behind 14-0 in the opening period, the Tigers exploded for a 22-point second quarter, thanks to a 78-yard pass from Johnson to receiver R.J. Quick, who in the same quarter ran a kickoff return 97 yards into the end zone. The game went into halftime in a draw. A consistent scoring effort by the Crusaders, however, including an overwhelming 21-point fourth quarter, kept Chapel Hill out of striking range in the second half.

The Tigers will seek to halt a two-game skid this Friday at home against Northern Vance.
