Carrboro High School will enter into a partnership with Guanajuato, Mexico, through a program created by the Center for International Understanding at UNC.
CHS joins seven other area schools in partnering with eight Guanajuato schools. The program is aimed at giving students an opportunity to learn how to communicate and collaborate across cultures.
For the program, Principal Kelly Batten and Spanish teacher L.J. Randolph will travel to Guanajuato Friday and spend next week learning about Mexican culture, history and education systems and meeting with their partner school to discuss a collaborative project.
Students will use communication technology, particularly web conferencing, to investigate the movement of animals, goods and people between the U.S. and Mexico.
Are your partner schools all in the city of Guanajuato? My husband and I are currently living in the town of San Miguel de Allende in the state of Guanajuato. We manage a scholarship program for at-risk public school students under the sponsorship of the local PEN chapter. And–would you believe it–we plan to move to Carrboro as soon as we can get a visa for our adopted Mexican daughter. (She’s completely bilingual, an excellent student in a private American-run school.) I’d love to know more about your program; perhaps we can help.
