The town of Hillsborough will swear in Duane Hampton as its new chief of police on Monday. The swearing-in will take place before the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners at 7 p.m. in the Town Barn located at 101 E. Orange St.
Hampton was selected from a pool of 200 applicants who applied for the job. He will replace former Chief Clarence Birkhead, who resigned in April to run for sheriff. Since January, he has served as the Durham Police Department’s assistant division commander of Criminal Investigations, overseeing the operations of homicide, youth, fraud and domestic violence investigations units and the forensic services and property and evidence units.
Hampton earned his Bachelor of Arts from Virginia Tech, his law-enforcement supervisory certificate from N.C. State and his Master of Public Administration from UNC.
