FOOTBALL

Carrboro: 55 – Whiteville: 33

With both Chapel Hill and East Chapel Hill unable to make the postseason, Carrboro competed last week as area fans’ sole remaining hope for Friday night football. Thankfully for us, the Jaguars stayed alive, as they rolled over Whiteville for a 55-33 victory in the school’s first-ever home playoff contest.

The Wolfpack (5-6) managed to hang with Carrboro at the outset, as the teams spent the initial minutes getting their playoff feet under them. After two periods, the score was tied, 20-20, due to three rushing touchdowns from Carrboro’s Torrell Farrar and a pair of TDs from Quamine Rose of Whiteville.

Against any other team, Whiteville’s 351 yards of total offense and 33 points would have likely been enough for a win. Not so against the Jaguars. In the second half, Carrboro (9-3) outscored the Wolfpack 35-14, making good use of the balanced offensive attack that had propelled them to a school-best eight wins.

Farrar continued to produce, as he found the end zone twice more. He was, however, perfectly happy to share the spotlight with teammates DeAndre White, who ran in two of his own, and Nassar Omar, who scored another on an 83-yard pass from quarterback Derek Bryant. Bryant, who went 10-13 for 250 yards on the night, worked efficiently, averaging an astonishing 25 yards per completion. All told, the Jags tallied close to 500 yards for the game, thanks to the 228 rushing yards Farrar and White added to Bryant’s own impressive total.

Carrboro’s playoff run continues on Friday night at 7-5 Fairmont.
