Inmate in custody after escape in UNC police car

Posted on November 18, 2010November 18, 2010 by Staff

You may soon see the name Farley Linford Bernard popping up on those TV shows devoted to police chases.

Bernard, an inmate at Pasquotank Correctional Institution near Elizabeth City, is in custody after escaping in a stolen UNC Police vehicle while receiving medical care at UNC Hospitals on Tuesday.

UNC police officials say Bernard escaped custody while at the hospital, then stole a UNC police vehicle during an encounter with a UNC Department of Public Safety officer outside the hospitals just before 1 p.m. He then sped down Emergency Room Drive, turning westbound on Manning Drive as two more UNC police vehicles engaged in pursuit. Bernard then headed northbound on South Columbia Street and eastbound on Franklin Street to Interstate 40.

In all, Bernard was pursued by officers from UNC, Chapel Hill and Hillsborough police; Orange and Alamance county sheriff’s department officers; and the State Highway Patrol. After crashing into the back of a truck on I-40 near Graham, Bernard was apprehended by State Highway Patrol in Alamance County around 1:30 p.m.
