Letter: Disregard on road decision

Posted on November 18, 2010November 18, 2010 by Staff

The Smith Level Rd Extension Plan has been bothering me for some time now. I attended the public hearing meeting where the town council, the mayor and the Department of Transportation spoke on what widening the road will entail. Most of the public spoke against widening the road for various reasons: loss of vegetation, condemning property, etc.

After the public spoke, Mayor Chilton got up and spoke for 30 minutes about how he has fought for a bike lane on the road and that this plan is the only way. Every other speaker was given a three-minute timer. Why does Mr. Chilton feel that he has the right to speak for 30 minutes and shame everyone in the room for thinking that widening the road would actually affect the people who live on the road?

I feel very strongly that Mayor Chilton abused his power and acted against the wishes of the public he supposedly serves.

In September, the news announced that regardless of the public, DOT, the town council and Mayor Chilton are going forward with this plan. They completely disregarded the concerns of those that live on the road. How can the citizens of Chapel Hill/Carrboro feel safe with such a government? This government is willing to bulldoze property without the slightest care or thought.
