A Thousand Words
By Jock Lauterer
After teaching photography to college undergraduates for over 20 years, I have discovered a new joy in teaching photo to children. It began a couple of years ago with my two granddaughters, then 6 and 7, with whom I bonded on “Photo-hikes with G-Pop.†Somehow that led to teaching photography to urban youth in inner-city Durham – and most recently, a semester’s worth of lessons, aided by my UNC photo class, with the third-graders at the new Union Independent School in Durham. What a sight: my 16 collegiates teaching those 16 bright and curious 8-year-olds. With minimal instructions, those children created hundreds of wonder-full and insightful images (using point-and-shoots supplied by UNC). The best 80 pictures will be showcased this evening (Thursday) from 5:30 to 7:30 at a reception in the gym at Union Independent School on the corner of North Roxboro and Dowd streets in Durham. Special thanks to store manager Emanuel Cole and the good folks at Wolf Camera in University Mall for partnering with us on this project. Are we having fun yet?
