Gordon Allen, who represented Orange and Person counties and served in both the N.C. House and Senate, died last week. He was 81.
Allen, owner of a Roxboro insurance company, served in the Senate from1969 to 1975. He was elected president pro-tem and majority leader in 1971 and played a key role during the reorganization of the UNC system and the expansion of the state’s community colleges.
After 20 years as a lobbyist for the N.C. Bankers Association, Allen returned to the General Assembly in 1997. He retired in 2005.
