Smith receives $100k EU grant

Posted on January 12, 2011 by Staff

The European Union has awarded Smith Middle School about $100,000 to fund “Getting to Know Europe Activities” at the school.

Smith has received this award three times. The grant will fund the school’s Belgian travel and exchange program, professional development for district world-language teachers and school-wide and community events, such as Euro-Zone for Global Connections and the Europe Day Celebration.

Under the grant, 31 students and others will travel to Paris, Normandy and Brussels before spending a week with pen pals in Belgium.

The EU awarded 11 such grants to American organizations, primarily universities. Smith French teacher Robin McMahon is the primary grant writer for the project.
