Letter: Autism lecture

Posted on April 14, 2011April 14, 2011 by Staff

The OPC Area Program is pleased to present our third annual Autism Awareness Lecture on Thursday, April 21. Dr. Jim Bodfish, the Thomas E. Castelloe Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at UNC, will present “Autism: advances, current challenges, and future directions.” Dr. Bodfish’s presentation, which is free and open to the public, will be held at Extraordinary Ventures at 200 S. Elliott Road in Chapel Hill. No pre-registration is required.

Dr. Geri Dawson, a past OPC presenter, has noted that North Carolina has been in the forefront in research and services. Dr. Bodfish will describe his work and that of colleagues at the Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities. CIDD offers a range of services, including an autism assessment clinic for preschoolers, support for adolescents and adults and a clinic for treatment of medical issues related to autism.

The clinical studies and applied practices by Dr. Bodfish and his colleagues are exciting developments for those individuals and families affected by autism. OPC invites all interested persons to attend. Please call 913-4055 for further information.

Thank you for this letter. Because of this letter I went to the lecture to learn more about autism. I am glad to see that these lectures are gaining more awareness. I went to this lecture because I am very curious as to the why of the prevalence of this disability. I am hoping that the general public becomes more aware of autism and helps to find out why it is becoming more and more common.
