Superintendent search over

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education will announce the district’s next superintendent today (Thursday) at 6:30 p.m. in the Smith Middle School auditorium.

The candidate was selected from a pool of 27 applicants, of which 10 were interviewed in March. The board launched the search for a new superintendent in October following Superintendent Neil Pedersen’s July announcement that he would retire at the end of the 2010-11 school year.

Over the past few months, the district has held two public forums, collected written statements from local organizations and individuals and solicited public opinion via a survey, with the guidance of the N.C. School Boards Association.

The search process was uncharted territory for school board members, as Pedersen has served as superintendent since 1992 and is the longest-serving superintendent in district history. Prior to his role as superintendent, Pedersen served for five years as an assistant superintendent with the district.

The new superintendent is expected to offer remarks at the meeting, which district officials announced on Tuesday. A brief reception will follow.
