Jeff’s Campus Confectionary, 1966

A Thousand Words
By Jock Lauterer

As I look back on the Franklin Street of my boyhood and recall the shops on the 100 block, I see faces – faces of longtime personalities who anchored those businesses: Papa D. of Danziger’s Old World Gift Shop, Vic Huggins of Huggins’ Hardware, Thell of Thell’s Bakery, E. Carrington Smith of the Carolina Theatre, Wally Kuralt of the Intimate Bookstore, Bob Varley of Varley’s Men’s Shop, Milton of Milton’s Clothing Cupboard, the Harrisons of Foister’s Camera Store and Harry Macklin of Harry’s … to name just a few. So last week when I read about the passing of 90-year-old James “Jimmy” Mousmoules, the long-time owner of Jeff’s Campus Confectionary, I was reminded of that iconic spot beside the Varsity Theatre. Mousmoules, long before the age of the 24/7 news and sports cycle, posted the latest college sports scores on a chalkboard outside Jeff’s. And does anybody else remember that marvelously gnarled Volga poplar tree outside the front door? Finally, in the interest of full disclosure, the covers of the adult magazines that lined the news racks caused a certain young newsboy to blush with guilty pleasure.
