CVS makes it official

CARRBORO — CVS Caremark has filed for a conditional-use permit and a rezoning to allow it to build a new drugstore and commercial building at the corner of Greensboro and Weaver streets.

The long-anticipated filing triggers the town’s formal review of the project, which would include a 26,300-square-foot building and parking area on land currently occupied by a former bank building at the corner, two homes on Center Street and the offices of dentist Debra Seaton.

Marty Roupe, a planner for Carrboro who has been monitoring the project, including the contentious discussions at meetings between downtown residents and CVS’s developer, Reddlands Inc. of Franklin, Tenn., said the plans will be reviewed by the town as well as officials with the state Department of Transportation and others. He said a schedule for review by the town’s advisory boards is being developed as well, but won’t start until the town planning staff and others have had time to examine the full proposal.

Roupe said the exact plans are likely to change through the review process, as engineers, planners and citizens weigh in on the project.

The two-story building located close to the Greensboro and Weaver intersection would have 12,900 square feet of retail space downstairs with 13,400 square feet of office and storage space above it.

The plans call for a total of 69 parking spaces, including 20 spaces in the existing parking lot on the southwest portion of the 1.48-acre parcel and 49 spaces for CVS parking in lots on the north end of the property. Access would be through entrances on Short and Weaver streets.

Delivery trucks would enter from the Weaver Street side, unload behind the drugstore and exit via Short Street.

CV$ corporate vultures swoop in and take advantage again. It seems that the “Keep It Local” slogan is empty. When will the Waffle House and the Lowe’s be moving in? Cowardly behavior on the part of local politicians.

I don’t understand how this is cowardly behavior by local politicians, John. They can’t stop CVS from planning or requesting a zoning change.

You want someone to blame? Blame Weaver Street. They’re the ones who sold the property. CVS is just doing what it does, building stores. The Weave are the ones who didn’t keep it local!

Since the CVS is already right across the street, and the corner of Greensboro and Weaver is a commercial area, I don’t understand how this becomes a “nonlocal” issue. If you look at the plans that were submitted they are in keeping with the character of other commercial buildings downtown and it seems to me a huge improvement over the eyesore that has been on this corner for the past many years.
