Woody Takes a Time-Out, 1983

A Thousand Words
By Jock Lauterer

All things must pass, but the retirement of Woody Durham is particularly hard to take. How on earth will I – and thousands of other Tar Heel fans – ever get through the next Tar Heel sports season without Woody? I will miss the iconic Voice of the Tar Heels especially during football season, when my preferred way to experience/suffer/rejoice through the game is thus: On any given gorgeous fall Saturday afternoon, I station three radios outside the house, positioned strategically so that as I go about my chosen yard chore (wood-splitting and log-toting) I’m never out of earshot of Woody and the latest gridiron highs and lows of the Heels. Searching this week for a way to honor the 40-year legacy of the veteran broadcaster, I found myself mysteriously drawn into Time-Out Restaurant at 133 W. Franklin St. in University Square, ET VOILA – there was the Woodman himself, in a black-and-white photograph framed and hung by owner Eddie Williams back in 1983. Thanks, Woody, for all the great memories.
