East students receive scholarships

Two East Chapel Hill High School seniors received prestigious national scholarships last week.

Young-Eun Hyun has been named one of 141 2011 Presidential Scholars nationwide. The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selected the scholars based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership and demonstrated commitment to high ideals.

The scholars will be honored for their accomplishments in Washington, D.C., June 18-21.

Hyun will attend Yale University.

Andrea Mendoza has been named a Gates Millennium Scholarship recipient. The program, administered by the United Negro College Fund, provides leadership training, mentoring, academic and social support and financial support to 1,000 students annually. Mendoza will attend Duke University.
