Obituary: Virginia Petty

In the morning hours of May 12, 2011, Virginia Petty, 84, was called home. 

She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Maggie Canada. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene “Diddle” Petty.

She leaves to cherish her memory Brenda Sturdivant, Cheryl Masters (Jim), Judy Petty and Kristi McClellan. In addition, she is survived by her five grandchildren, Patrick Bradley (Betsy), Jeff Masters (Crystal), Katie Masters, Heather Sturdivant and Lindsi McClellan. To her great-grandchildren Wyland, Jaylen and Chloe, she was known as “Granny.”

She loved her family, life, flowers, helping others, good food and preparing great food for her family and others.

She was the final surviving member of her family. She was preceded in death by her four brothers, T.W., Leroy, Raybert and Raymond Canada, and her two sisters, Ruth Kicklighter and Betty Canada.

Virginia was a former member of Carrboro Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess. She was an active member of Carrboro United Methodist Church. She was also an active member of the Carrboro Garden Club and the Carrboro Civic Club.

Services were held Saturday, May 14 at 2 p.m. at Carrboro United Methodist Church, with burial at Westwood Cemetery in Carrboro.
