The Carrboro Citizen’s website became temporarily unavailable last week after the site was flagged by several Internet service providers as a host for malicious software, but the malware has since been removed. The website has been submitted to Google for removal from its blacklist. [note: Google has remove the site blacklist as of Thursday am 5/26/11.]
The Citizen does not intentionally serve malicious software.
Beginning last Thursday afternoon, some visitors to the newspaper’s site, carrborocitizen.com, were told by antivirus software or ISPs that the site was insecure.
“We don’t know how it happened, but as best we can tell, nobody was actually having their computer infected,†Citizen publisher Robert Dickson said.
The paper will upgrade its security and change website hosting providers to improve service to readers, Dickson said. The Citizen apologizes for the inconvenience the outage may have brought.
