County OKs $100k for plant

Posted on June 8, 2011 by Staff

A Mebane manufacturing facility’s plans for a $3 million expansion would add 40 jobs to the plant under a five-year, $100,000 economic-development grant from Orange County to AKG North America, a manufacturer of heat exchangers for heavy industry.

County commissioners unanimously approved the grant at their Tuesday meeting, hailing the agreement as a step forward for economic development and job growth in the county. The average salary of new jobs at the plant would be $44,000, according to county estimates.

The Germany-based firm has operated the facility in Mebane since 1981.

In further economic-development news, commissioners agreed to make permanent the hiring of economic-development director Gary Shope, who has served in the position on an interim basis since February.
