Wildfire smoke blankets region

Smoke from wildfires in Dare and Pender counties covered the Triangle on Tuesday, causing local and state officials to issue air-quality warnings and notify residents of the smoke.

The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources said conditions could have caused unhealthy air conditions in the Triangle until as late as Wednesday. Chapel Hill officials ask town residents not to call for fire service unless they see a fire source or smell smoke within their homes.
