Letter: 21st Century Farmers’ Markets

Posted on July 14, 2011July 14, 2011 by Staff

If you have used your debit or credit card or your Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) benefits at Carrboro Farmers’ Market and received tokens to buy local farm products, then you’ve been participating in North Carolina’s 21st Century Farmers’ Markets program, a free-of-charge program for customers. Since 2010, the Carrboro Farmers’ Market has been participating in the statewide program, a state-sponsored and federally sanctioned agricultural retailer program, which 27 other N.C. farmers markets share in common.

The N.C. 21st Century Farmers’ Markets program is made possible by the leadership of Chapel Hill-based Leaflight, a statewide nonprofit, with support from the N.C. Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services; N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Social Services; USDA FNS; farmers; and citizens.

Thank you, Carrboro citizens, for your participation in our program! As the Carrboro Farmers’ Market increasingly generates market revenue through the ATM machine, and $5 tokens are no longer sold, $5 tokens will continue to be accepted by farmers. One-dollar tokens will remain for sale to FNS recipients all season.
