A Thousand Words
By Jock Lauterer
One of the reasons real-book libraries are so valuable has to do with simple serendipity. Out of my bookshelf, I chanced upon a diary belonging to my Aunt Mary Baldwin, the editor of the weekly Fairmount, Ind., News. And from that little book fell this letter, a response typed on formal letterhead from the Congress of the United States and signed by Indiana 10th District Rep. Raymond S. Springer. It reads: “Dear Friend: I want to thank you for your card and message in which you refer to the situation in Washington, D.C. We will continue the fight throughout against deedless expense, extravagance and waste. Things are in an appalling situation in our country.â€
Did I mention the letter is dated 1943?
