A raccoon that came in contact with the foot and leg of a Chapel Hill resident on Aug. 27 tested positive for rabies.
The raccoon was found in the area of Erwin Road and Chippoaks Drive in Chapel Hill and was called in by a resident who said the animal was acting in a strange manner. A nurse with the health department will help the resident evaluate the risk of rabies exposure.Â
Seven of the eight cases that have tested positive for rabies in 2011 in Orange County have been from raccoons.
A low-cost rabies vaccination clinic will be held Sept. 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Public Market House in Hillsborough.
