A Thousand Words

Lest we forget … there is another Ground Zero, the forgotten one perhaps, to some, but never to those who have visited and experienced the eerily silent, wind-tossed, flower-strewn meadow between Bradford and Somerset in southwest-central Pennsylvania where United Airlines Flight 93 went down on that awful day. A makeshift memorial quickly sprang up, erected by a thankful stream of prayer-sayers and grieving souls. On a chain-link fence, ordinary folks began leaving behind artifacts of gratitude and tribute – this one most poignant to me on that 2004 summer’s day visit – a Fisher-Price toy jetliner with the heartfelt thanks of two young students from the nearby Shanksville Elementary School, spared by the heroics of the “Let’s Roll!†passengers.
