Thirty-one Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools students were named semifinalists in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
The students, all high school seniors, will have the opportunity to continue in the competition for the chance at 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $34 million. Students qualified for the program by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The semifinalists are the highest-scoring entrants in each state, and represent less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors.
Carrboro High School semifinalists include: Laura Hamon, Jason Ilieve, Michael Jushchuk, Frank McBride, Hadley Reid and Hannah Schwarz.
Chapel Hill High School semifinalists include: Zaynah Alam, Eric Anderson, Olivia Dang, Anya Josephs, Kristen Laubscher, Daphne Liu, Abby Muller, Esther Rolf, Melody Song, Katherine Stafford, Jacob Stern, Adam Wang and Jean Ye.
East Chapel Hill High School semifinalists include: Shreya Das, Shuo Deng, Karishma Desai, Katherine Gunn, William Holub-Moorman, Ching-Ying Lin, Daniel Liu, Benjamin Marks, Sophie To, Hannah Weaver, Benjamin Zalutsky and Li Zhang.
