LETTER: Responding to residents on DOMA

Posted on September 22, 2011September 22, 2011 by Staff

This past week, I received more than 650 cards and as many emails from constituents in Orange County opposing SB514, “The Defense of Marriage Act” better known as the marriage amendment.
It is not possible for me to respond to each person, so I am offering this public thank you to everyone who participated in this important public policy debate. No issue has prompted such an overwhelming and uniform response since my first session in 1997. Among all the cards and emails I received, fewer than a dozen were in support of the bill.
I voted against the bill and share the disappointment of this community that the bill passed and that legislators would even consider putting discrimination into our state constitution. I also share the hope and expectation that North Carolinians will reject this amendment in May 2012.

Rep. Verla Insko
House District 56 – Orange County
