LETTER: Proposed store not a good fit

Posted on October 6, 2011 by Staff

Those of us who live in Carrboro know what a special town it is: beautiful natural surroundings, a welcoming small-town atmosphere, many unique locally owned businesses and neighbors who care about one another. However, those wonderful qualities are facing a serious threat in my neighborhood. A Family Dollar store has been proposed for the small wooded lot at the end of my street, right behind the Pantry on Jones Ferry Road. Developers of this ordinary chain store plan to cut down all the trees and pave over the small stream on this site, then they will locate its dumpsters just 20 feet from my neighbor’s bedroom window, all in order to sell their mass-produced foreign products to the residents of our town. Yes, Carrboro will benefit from this development to the tune of eight new jobs and some property- and sales-tax revenues, but the real profits will follow the developers back to their homes in Wake County. More importantly, this store will cost our town in lost beauty and reduced uniqueness, plus it will compromise the safety and well-being of yet another historically African-American neighborhood. A Family Dollar store is NOT the “perfect fit” for my neighborhood or our town that its out-of-town developers claim! If you agree with me, please join me at the Town of Carrboro Planning Board meeting at Town Hall today, Thursday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m. to show your support and/or express your opinion.
