A blast from the past, 1975

A Thousand Words
By Jock Lauterer

In celebration of the opening of the UNC men’s basketball season, here’s a blast from the past, courtesy of Breadmen’s Restaurant on West Rosemary in Chapel Hill: the cover of the 1975-76 Basketball Bluebook featuring three mod-styled hoopsters posing on the front steps of old Person Hall. Old-timers may remember the ivy and the statue replaced first by the Thomas Wolfe memorial and later by the present-day monument honoring the founding trustees of 1789. The photograph made me wonder who our cover boys were and what ever happened to the statue? With a little sleuthing, we found our answers. The three players are, left to right, Bill Chambers, Dave Hanners and Mitch Kupchak. The statue, “Youth Conquering the Wild,” is by Anna Hyatt Huntington, and has been at the Ackland Art Museum “for many years … moved there to protect it from the elements,” writes Anne Douglas of UNC Facilities Planning. The rest of the team of “history detectives” who helped uncover this photograph’s back-story include Steve Kirschner from UNC Sports Information, Bob Anthony from Wilson Library, Jay Gaidmore from the North Carolina Collection and Cecilia Moore, special assistant to the chancellor. Go Heels!
