LETTER: Police handled Yates situation well

Posted on December 1, 2011 by Staff

I would like to commend the Chapel Hill Police Department for the professionalism with which it handled the eviction of trespassers from the Yates Motor Company Building on Nov. 13. In handling the eviction, the goal of the department and the town was to remove the trespassers without serious injury to any persons. This goal was successfully achieved. Those persons who protest the department›s action, saying the police should have done something other than what they did, cannot explain how a different approach would have resulted in less injury since no injury occurred, nor can they demonstrate that some other approach would not have resulted in injury.
I would also like to commend the town for the support it has given to the police department in this matter and for its consistent support of the right of free speech. The Occupy movement is a reaction to serious political and economic problems, but the events at the Yates Building are a distraction from serious discussion of those issues. The leaders of our town deserve appreciation for the calm deliberation that has characterized their approach to a difficult situation.
