LETTER: Shame on you!

Posted on December 1, 2011 by Staff

The Human Rights Center (HRC) has been in Abbey Court since 2009. We played a role in the recent town decision to rescind the anti-loitering ordinance (by talking with the workers and successfully convincing them to come up with their Code of Good Conduct). More comprehensively, we (with many, many college students) offer many programs and services: an after-school program (with Scroggs teachers), free Wi-Fi and text messaging, ESL classes, soccer, computer classes, cooking and yoga classes, health resources, underwriting the costs of festivals, and Burmese and Karen programs. We work collaboratively with TABLE, El Centro Hispano and the Carrboro Farmers’ Market. With wage theft at a historic high, we work with workers and the Department of Labor.
But now the HRC is under siege. In spite of the fact that we have a town permit and a 501(c)(3) certification, the management of Abbey Court is slapping us with a fine of $200 per day for operating a commercial establishment. This is nonsense. We have no choice but to leave Abbey Court and abandon the people we have grown to love and who dignity we have unquestionably enhanced.

Judith Blau
Director, Human Rights Center
