LETTER: Donate to record ‘Christmas Sing’

Posted on December 15, 2011 by Staff

For more than 25 years, Chapel Hill’s own Jim Watson, a founder of the Red Clay Ramblers and renowned old-time musician, has held an annual “Christmas Sing” at The Cave, Chapel Hill’s oldest tavern. The show, which includes a set of audience participation caroling along with Jim soloing in his inimitable “high lonesome” tenor, is a true community tradition that has never been recorded. For this year’s show on Dec. 22, I am leading an effort to have the show professionally recorded as a community archive and for possible future release of a not-for-profit recording. To make this happen, I have to raise $1,000 for good quality professional recording. If you are interested in contributing, send a check to The Cave, 452 1/2 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC 27516, with “Christmas Sing” in the memo line. This is not a tax-deductible contribution; it’s just a great opportunity to hold on to a precious tradition by one of our finest (and funnest) local treasures. Come on down that night; for only $7, you can be a part of the fun.
