In memoriam, JoePa, 1994

A Thousand Words
By Jock Lauterer

If I remember correctly, this photo was taken during the halcyon season of 1994, when Penn State, under the legendary leadership of Coach Joe Paterno, went 12-0. A photojournalism professor at PSU, I was shooting this game on assignment for the PSU alumni magazine. To be a sideline photographer in Beaver Stadium on a crisp autumn day, bombarded with “We ARE … Penn STATE!” from 94,000 screaming Nittany Lion fans, is to be “directly above the center of the earth,” as one fan described it. Whatever else you may think about the unprecedented career and now tainted legacy of the late “JoePa,” the man was a force of nature, and I count myself fortunate to have been there then. University photographer Greg Grieco shot this image of Paterno and me on the sidelines during pre-game warm-ups. Grieco was using a Nikon F5 with Kodak Tri-X black and white film.
