Sculpture gifted to Chapel Hill

Posted on January 26, 2012January 25, 2012 by Staff

GS Carolina, LLC and the David L. Guy Family have donated Magnolia Exotica, a large stainless-steel sculpture by artist Carl Regutti, to the Town of Chapel Hill.
The sculpture is a 16-foot-tall stainless-steel obelisk with colored magnolia blossoms. Magnolia Exotica is located at the intersection of North Columbia Streets and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The value of the sculpture has been appraised at $90,000.

Regutti, who has a background in science and metallurgy, developed a method for creating multi-colored stainless steel. His method remains a trade secret and Magnolia Exotica was his first large-scale experiment with the metal.
